The Old Destroyer Squadron
A Space Chantie for Tom Corbett, Space Cadet
(based on the original ballad the Armoured Cruiser Squadron)
Revised Words (C) 1997 by Dansen T. Stahl
When the Atomic Cruiser Squadron became
popular in 2060 the destroyer squadron boys felt the need to respond with
a song of their own. Unfortunately, there was little denying that the destroyers
had been well used in their service and were little to be proud of except
historically. This particular version of the song arose anonymously (at
least, no one who knows who started it is talking) but it is suspected
that it started aboard the Kepler.
- The Admiral walks his quarterdeck.
When he sees our ship he says, "By heck!
Here comes that ancient rambling wreck
from the Old Destroyer Squadron!".
- The Skipper's good for fourty rounds.
In port he rides behind the hounds
but on the ship he can't be found
in the Old Destroyer Squardon.
- Our young "Exec", with anxious
brow,
walks the deck and says as how,
the sleeveless undershirts must go
in the Old Destroyer Squadron.
- Our Navigator's full of tar.
He shoots an asteroid for a star
and wonders where in heck we are
in the Old Destroyer Squadron.
- Our Gunnery Officer's full of pluck.
He aims the guns guns and trusts to luck.
He knows dam' well he'll pass the buck
in the Old Destroyer Squadron.
- Our Engineer's our standard joke.
At quarter speed along we poke
Our laser rail well nigh broke
in the Old Destroyer Squadron.
- And when our ship has rung her knell
and dropped a hook at the gates of Hell
the Skipper he'll say, "Very well."
in the Old Destroyer Squadron.
